Author's Note: This is in no way a complete analysis of Nick. He's a lot more complex than even I realized at first. I may add to this essay at a later date, but for now, this is a brief look into his character. The essay jumps around a lot, it was more a stream-of-consciousness thing than an actual essay.

Nick (aka Nicholas David Keller)

Nick is a hard character to understand, and an even harder one to enjoy. (Unless of course, you know why he acts the way he does) It also makes writing him an interesting task.

The reason Nick was created, the way he turned out, and his current purpose are all related, but not all the same. Nick is the only one of my characters that actually has an outside purpose at the moment. His original reason for being created was to act as a friend for Rizzo. Someone Rizzo could talk to/hang out with. That and being an actor were the only two things I had to create a character from.

Originally, I didn't even know if Nick was going to be a buy or a girl. I gave my brain some time to see what it came up with, and pretty soon Nick was "born." When he started out, even I thought he was obnoxious. He was either hitting on people or insulting them, and I was pretty sure he was going to overdo it, push someone too far, and possibly get beat up in the process. I would find out later that it's happened before, and he doesn't really mind all that much.

It very quickly became clear that Nick doesn't lead the most responsible life. He's often out partying, being able to find a party any night of the week. He often skips class, and it's not quite known (even by me) how he actually manages to stay in school. His life is mostly comprised of the aforementioned parties (and if he can't find one, he'll make his own), sleeping with people, drinking, and drugs. He's very rarely completely sober, but most people can't tell/don't know.

The one thing Nick takes seriously is his acting. He sees it as the one thing he's actually good at (besides, y'know, sex). And amazingly, he is very good at it.

Nick started out life as a very normal little kid. He was an only child to a young, well-off couple. He had everything he needed or wanted, including a lot of love and attention from his parents.

Things started to change when he was 8 or 9 years old. His parents started fighting more, his dad would stay late at the office, and his mom would go out with her friends and leave him with the babysitter. After close to two years Nick's parents finally got a divorce.

Nick's parents shared custody and he was shuffled between houses for the next few years. Both his parents quickly remarried, and by the time he was 14 Nick had several half-siblings. With their new families, his parents had little time for Nick, and he eventually decided he didn't have time for them either. He stopped visiting his dad and lived with his mom, but rarely even saw her.

Around the time he was 14, Nick got to high school and found a new group of friends. Most of them drank and smoked, and Nick quickly joined in, adapting easily to his new life.

His sophomore year of high school, one of his friends told nick to try out for the school play as a dare. He did, and everyone (including himself) was surprised when he got a fairly good part. He adored the attention it got him, so he continued acting through the rest of high school, often getting large roles in the productions. Neither of his parents has ever come to see him perform.

By the time he graduated from high school, Nick had collected quite a few piercings and one small tattoo. He has since added four more piercings, bringing the total up to 15. He's adopted the Goth look, dying his hair black (and sometimes blue as well), and wearing black nail polish and eyeliner, and dark clothes. He removes the piercings and dyes his hair for show performances, but always returns to the Goth look.

Nick lives for attention. Without it, he begins to feel like he doesn't exist. That is the basis for nearly everything he does. He thrives on physical contact, but has never had an actual relationship with anyone. This has lead to a staggering number of one-night stands, with almost anyone who shows an interest. He rarely sleeps twice with the same person. And never more than that. (That being said, he is careful. He never has sex without protection, no matter how messed up he is, and he's tested for everything more often than other people do their laundry. [Okay, maybe not quite that often, but he's tested a lot].).

Little known Nick facts:

• His tattoo is a small Japanese kanji on the right side of his lower abdomen. It stands for "alone."
• He lost his virginity two weeks after his 14th birthday.
• He's actually a very good singer. He's been in a few musicals, but most of the time he'd rather not sing.
• When he's sober, he's very good at math. The second he's not, his math skills go out the window.
